| I was there!! stuck in LA for like 12 hours... haha it wasn't too bad...more exciting than anything (too bad I was still stuck on the plane when the news people came). At least for me. But let me tell you, after getting through customs and rebooking flights ONCE, it wasn't so fun anymore =( just tiring... but those poor airport worker people must have been exhausted and totally frustrated. Passengers stuck in planes after computer fails - Los Angeles International Airport screening system breaks down
- More than 20,000 international passengers forced to wait in terminals, planes
- "People are getting a little stir-crazy, feeling claustrophobic," one passenger says
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Weary international passengers were stuck at Los Angeles International Airport for several hours, after a computer failure prevented customs officials from screening arrivals. More than 20,000 international passengers, both Americans and foreigners, sat in four airport terminals and in 60 planes starting about 2 p.m. on Saturday, when the computer system broke down, said Los Angeles World Airports spokesman Paul Haney. A major switch in the system, which contains names of arriving passengers and law enforcement data about them, including arrest warrants, had failed and had to be replaced, said Mike Fleming, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman. "That system allows our officers to make decisions on who we can allow to enter the United States," Fleming said. "You just don't know by looking at them." The computers were fully restored at 11:45 p.m., and the last of backlogged passengers were processed by early Sunday, Fleming said. "This is probably one of the worst days we've had. I've been with the agency for 30 years and I've never seen the system go down and stay down for as long as it did," Peter Gordon, acting port director for customs, told The Los Angeles Times. Officials diverted seven incoming flights to an Ontario airport and advised international passengers departing Sunday to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport. Terminals at the Los Angeles airport that normally accept international passengers were full by 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and passengers arriving afterward had to remain on the runway until there was room inside the terminal buildings. Three people were transported to local hospitals after they fell ill from waiting in the terminals, according to the Los Angeles City Fire Department. "This is just unbearable," said Gaynelle Jones, 57, who landed on a 13-hour flight from Hong Kong at about 2:15 p.m. and was still sitting on her plane five hours later. She said she had missed her connecting flight to Houston. "We've already been on a plane for several hours, and they have no timeframe for when we'll be able to get off," Jones said during a cell phone interview. Airport officials said the stranded planes were connected to ground power and passengers had access to food, water and bathrooms. "People are getting a little stir-crazy, feeling claustrophobic," said Chris Cognac, 39, who was returning with family and friends -- including 10 children -- from a week in Puerto Vallarta. The group had been sitting on the tarmac for five hours when he spoke by phone. Passengers on his plane were in the aisles, holding their carry-on luggage, and ready to disembark when the flight crew asked them to return to their seats, Cognac said. "Everybody's pretty angry with customs at the moment because they're not informing any one of anything," Cognac said. "It's becoming a logistical issue with diapers." | Summer is almost over -_- I just got my summer reading assignment in the mail like a week ago (which I only just started yesterday). It was so weird having hw to do again... not that I ever thought college would be without homework... but it just made me feel like I was in hs all over again. But I really enjoy this assignment. I'm reading "The Idea of a Christian College"... It's nice because the author explains his idea of the purpose of a Christian school. I like that Covenant requires all its students to read this book so all the students understand that we're not at school to be some kind of defensive christian coalition against the evil of the world or anything (which is what people stereotype Christian schools as) but rather to learn how we can live a life integrating our faith to our jobs/education so that it becomes one rather than two separate things. Even though this assignment is really easy to do in the sense that it interests me...I still don't want to do it cuz now I want to do a really good job...sooo i don't want to start..but i reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally have to! I'm leaving next Friday for China...and then when I get back I have 4 days till I leave for school -_- i mussssst do this assignment. I'm going to be working in the admissions office this year (YAYYY)! I e-mailed my advisor yesterday and she replied telling me that I'd be one of those people who answered phone calls =) yayyy I'm soo excited! I loovee phone calls! and I looveee answering people's questions!! ... She then sent me another e-mail telling me that my admissions counselors recommended me as a "blogger". I could get paid to write entries on the school website about anything I want to. I don't know if that's what I want to do. I think if I did choose that job, I'd have a good time doing it (esp since I'll get feedback so I'm not writing to nobody... yes people actually read it). Hmm..paid to sit in my dorm room typing on my computer about classes/life/anything that comes to mind. I know that's a job Andrew would love =P But I can't decide yet....I think I need to clarify the job more maybe. If I did that I wouldn't have to worry about getting lost in the school because people would know who I am! I'd be one of three students who blog for the school. That's something I really want... I want to be able to stand out because I push myself harder and work harder when I'm involved in things... Bu I don't have to blog just to stand out. I don't want that to be the reason I do it. I want to do it because ...well because I want to. So anyway... I have to pray a little harder/longer about it. I'm kinda scared that once I start writing blogs I'll suddenly become a more thoughtful person (which is good)...but then my brain will be all full of stuff that matters instead of silly things..and I like silly things... -_- I don't want to part with my dumbness. Ahaha maybe I won't have to...yay. Well...we'll see. Either way I'll be working in admissions! My dream come true XD XD XD I've spent the past week cleaning and packing for school (because I'm leaving for China next week)... my room is much more mature looking now (if you ignore the yellow/bablyblue walls with bows..) =) It looks really girly still, but I guess I can't hide who I really am. I like flowers. XD prettyyyy lavender bows la la la.. but I took off all my magazine clippings and put up postcards instead =) I really like it. All my bedding for school is green and pink! hehehe and soft and fluffy and..I'm soo excited to make my bed! My roommate is really cool too! She's like meeee!! pink and bubbllyy yay. We're gonna have a great time together! XD XD XD oh the excitment is just toooo much. teeehehehe I'm gonna pee my pants. | | |
| Sooo I’m at work right now, taking a break =) Man it’s exhausting! I sit there all day staring at the computer screen and little sound waves…and then I delete and move them as needed. I listen to my daddy’s voice rambling all day (I only say rambling cuz it’s all in Chinese and I don’t have time to actually listen to what he’s saying cuz I’m too busy following the Chinese on the paper so I know where to cut and such and suchess). I’m almost done with the lesson though! It’s like 25 pages long. After I’m done cutting the rough file, I get to go through it again and check for silly things like …word mistakes and the funny clicking sound your tongue makes when you’ve been reading out loud for too long and you’re running out of spit. Hahaha. And thennnnnnnnn I get to match up the Chinese file to the English file (ahaaahaa like dubbing). Then I’ll probably work on the draft form of the power point presentation that goes with the sound file =) that’s fun cuz at least there will be a day when I’m not staring at sound waves. Then!! I get to start all over with a new lesson =) My daddy is all excited. On the way home yesterday he was like “I’m gonna teach you all this technology stuff! But you know, it’s not REALLY like programming or anything! It’s just learning to use the technology! You’re very intuitive even though programming isn't your thing!” haha I don’t know if that’s supposed to be a good thing. All I know is that I work at a quick pace, which he likes. I think he's super happy because I've never really been interested in anything he likes. Not that I'm interested in this sound cutting stuff, but at least I'm giving him the illusion that I am...haha. I think I should get paid more for the stuff I do. My eyes are going crazzyy and it’s only been a day and a half. He says I’m allowed to take breaks…but I don’t know what to do during break cuz I have no friends. Hahaha. I guess it’s sometimes hard working with my daddy when my daddy is my boss because then I don’t interact with the other people in the office. I’m not a groupy member =( but it’s okay. Hahah it’s my second year working here, you’d think I’d make some friends. Maybe I only have a quick working speed cuz I have nothing better to do than to work.. Oh well, at least I’m being productive. Speaking of productive, I think I’m currently experiencing the most productive summer ever =) I’m soo excited to be productive! So yea, the first week off school…actually I don’t even know when the first week off school was because of my funky mass of exams. Oh well, lets just say the week after graduation, cuz that’s when I started to feel REALLY lazy and definitely did NOT want to take that last AP exam. So anyway…I spent the weekend at Lake Yale for the retreat and that was quite productive cuz I had a scheduled weekend with meals / free time / messages / workshops / small group time and such. I got back from the retreat and slept till 5ish..then headed off to Altamonte mall to watch pirates..which was all sold out, so we decided to watch a later showing and go to Panera instead. Then we watched the movie =). Then I spent Monday at Angie’s house writing thank you letters to my mission supporters (thanks! =D) and working on the fundraiser (which is this Friday, please come!). We spent 3 hours writing letters and 1 hour making an outline and writing script and then another 4 hours practicing (singing/piano-ing)…then we ate dinner and watched the Miss Universe pageant =) I liked Korea! Really didn’t like Japan...but whatever, she won. I liked India too but we knew she wasn’t gonna make it =( Oh well! Tuesday Angie, Jerry, and I went out with Dylan and his parents and little brother. We had Dim Sum and went to a cute little Anime store (hehe I bought monkey stickers! And those fizzy Japanese candies, which are soo good) and then we had bubble tea! I had jasmine tea I think… well, it was really good! Then we went back to Angie’s house and I worked on the Fundraiser some more. Hm…Wednesday…I can’t remember, but I was stuck at home with no car…maybe I slept and read and watch movies or something… Thursday there was all this drama with crazy over protective parents and yea whatever. Friday we had rehearsal for the fundraiser from 1-7. That was insane, but soooo great! I had fun =) and I lost my voice, but that was alright =) Thenn we had youth group at Erin’s house…ate strawberries =) Saturday my parents had this reunion thing with some of their friends from Grad School. It made me think, “I sure hope we have reunions too.” Not just school organized ones, but ones we organize ourselves. Actually, now that I think about it, I was so bored that I did a lot of thinking. You know, it’s weird how you can (well, I can) meet old friends over and over again but not feel close to them, but when I meet a Christian family, I immediately feel close to them. It must be that whole spiritual family thing. It’s nice—and comforting =) So I basically sat around all afternoon, I got so bored that I finally finished “Corner with Love”. Not that it’s bad or anything, I just stopped in the middle and didn’t feel like watching the rest cuz I was scared the ending might ruin the whole series, but Saturday I was like “ohhh what ever”. The ending was a bit thrown together, but it didn’t ruin the whole series, so that was good. Then we went to Premium outlets. I didn’t buy anything (surprisingly). My mom and I were too busy finding things for daddy and jerry. I know, we’re so kind. =) Then we went to Ming Court for dinner. Ohh man it was soo embarrassing, but I finally started talking to the other kids at the reunion (other kids as in, 4 other guys + jerry). One of the college guys remained quiet and seemingly miserable, but the other guy, I guess he was just shy before cuz once we started talking, everything was fine. After dinner all the kids (minus that one guy…even though we like begged him) went to feed the fish. MAN, it was GROSS… but pretty entertaining. Then we walked around downtown a little bit, not too far cuz the little one was scared. Haha how cute. Sunday was church =) After church we played Mario Party at my house (Angie and I won!...well were winning when we had to leave). Then we went to Panera for our mission meeting. We taught Sara the Chinese tiger song XD. After that, Erin, Aron, Jenny, Angie, and I headed off to Jenny’s house for more fundraiser practice. We practiced till dinner...and then practiced after dinner (except I fell asleep…haha) and then we played Mario Party some more! Man! Angie and I were soooooooooo close to beating Aron, but nooo in the end because there’s that bonus round, Aron won and we were mad. Well, not really mad cuz we were too tired. Haha then we went home. Monday I went to work, came home, cleaned the bathroom, took Jerry to karate, ate dinner, went to pick jerry up, visited some people, and then went grocery shopping. In summary…very productive =) I’m so excited! This is the best summer EVER! Ehe I’m almost done with my lunch break and I’ve got two more pages left of stuff to edit XD | | |
